Crosby, Stills & Nash Turned a Simple Song About Family Into a Timeless Message for Every Generation

A song about generations

In 1970, Crosby, Stills & Nash released “Teach Your Children,” a gentle song that captured something much bigger than a simple country-rock melody.

The song was written by Graham Nash after seeing a photograph connected to the Vietnam War era. Rather than writing directly about politics, Nash created a message about parents, children and the responsibility each generation has toward the next.

The recording featured warm three-part harmonies, acoustic guitars and a relaxed country-rock arrangement.

It sounded simple.

But the message was powerful.
